Ratoh Jaroe Dance - Opening Ceremony Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta

Spectacular Ratoh Jaroe Dance at the Opening Ceremony Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta - performed by 1,600 High School dancers selected from 18 Senior High Schools across Jakarta.

The "sea of nearly two thousand young amateur dancers" wowed the audience with stunning precision in this highly energetic performance choreographed by Denny Malik with the help of his local creative teams / advisors.

In addition to the thriving rhythms and powerful chants, elaborate Quick Change style costume layers provided an ever changing color scheme resembling at times typical motifs and patterns of Sumatran Songket and Javanese Batik designs.

Note: At first glimpse, the traditional Ratoh Jaroe dance looks similar to the ethnic Saman dance, which also originates from Aceh, the westernmost province of Sumatra, but shows significant differences in style, movement, tempo and costume.
